Auricular (Ear) Acupuncture

What is Ear Acupuncture?

Ear (or Auricular) acupuncture is similar to body acupuncture but with ear acupuncture stimulation is only to the external ear. Ear acupuncture is a method of treating a variety of physiological and psychological health problems by the stimulation of certain acupuncture points on the external ear. Classical body acupuncture is thought to have been originally developed in China over 5000 years ago; ear acupuncture was also thought to have been developed in China around the same time, however it has been, until fairly recently, a poor relation of classical body acupuncture. It was in the 1950’s that the French Physician, the late Dr Paul Nogier, researched and developed the auricular acupuncture we value today. Nogier discovered that the position of the ear points and zones were approximately in the position of an upside down foetus, super-imposed on the external ear, with the head located around the lobe of the ear. Dr Paul Nogier’s research also indicated that every part of the body has its own representative acupuncture point on the external ear, and that stimulation of one of these points can stimulate the corresponding organ. The effects of acupuncture have been shown to be brought about through the nervous system linked to that particular ear point. Every organ has a nerve supply which can either speed up or slow down the functions of that particular organ, and due to a variety of factors like chronic stress, these organs can become over stimulated or under stimulated. It is known that acupuncture causes the release of many potent, morphine like, pain relieving chemicals called endorphin's and the neurotransmitter serotonin which affects mood.

What can Ear Acupuncture do for me?

Some people turn to ear acupuncture for help with a specific symptom or condition. Others choose to have treatment to help maintain good health, as a preventive measure, or simply to improve their general sense of wellbeing. Because traditional ear acupuncture aims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms in isolation, it can be effective for a range of conditions. Many people return to acupuncture again and again because they find it so beneficial and relaxing.

What can I expect during an Ear Acupuncture therapy?

Ear acupuncture involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points within the external ear. Sometimes a breathing technique can be used to calm and relax the client, the needles are left in both ears for 30-40 minutes in order for the client to feel the full effect. Once the needles have been removed from the ear's we will dispose of them in a safe and appropriate manner.

How long is the session?

We carry out this treatment in one hour sessions. Your first session will involve a full consultation to find out about your main concerns, and to assess your overall past health history. Your practitioner will work out a treatment plan using this information and tailor the process to your individual needs. Information about any medication/supplements you are taking will be useful to us at this stage, as well as any recent test results. After the consultation, there will be time for a short treatment.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on the severity of your symptoms and the nature of your condition, we will take time in your initial consultation to work out a timescale which bests suits your individual needs. However, we do usually see clients around one or two times per week for first four weeks.

Does Ear Acupuncture hurt?

As we are breaking the skin when we insert the needle's you are likely to feel a small, noticeable pricking sensation but this shouldn't be painful.

What do I need to wear?

It is best to wear loose clothing for your therapy sessions, and we do not recommend that you eat a large meal, drink strong coffee or alcohol just prior to a treatment.

What happens if I fall asleep during the session?

Falling asleep during ear acupuncture is actually very common and is nothing to be embarrassed about, in fact a large proportion of our client's do fall into a deep sleep during the process due to its relaxing nature.

Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?

Nothing - just bring yourself and we will do the rest!

How will I feel after an Ear Acupuncture session?

We would expect you to feel very calm and relaxed once we have removed the acupuncture needle's from your ear's.
